Cosmetic Lip Tattoo FAQ

Does it hurt?

The procedure is mildly uncomfortable, but most clients find it quite manageable. In fact, some clients are so relaxed that they fall asleep during the session! To maximise your comfort, I apply a topical numbing cream before starting.

If you're particularly sensitive to pain, you can take 1- 2 Panadol tablets about 30 minutes before your appointment. However, please DO NOT take Aspirin or Ibuprofen as they can lead to excessive bleeding and might increase sensitivity to pain during the procedure.

How long will it last?

The longevity of a lip tattoo typically ranges between 2 to 5 years, influenced by factors like skin type, overall health, and lifestyle habits. To maintain the vibrancy of your permanent makeup, I suggest an annual touch-up.

Be aware that the following can accelerate the fading of your semi-permanent tattoo:

  • Having oily skin

  • Using products containing Benzoyl Peroxide, Glycolic Acid, or Retinol

  • Applying Vitamin E and C topically

  • Regular exfoliation

  • Iron deficiency

  • Frequent exposure to saltwater

  • Prolonged sun exposure

Taking these factors into account can help in prolonging the life of your lip tattoo.

How many appointments do I need?

Permanent makeup requires a two-step appointment process, and both sessions are covered in the initial cost. Your follow-up appointment is typically scheduled 6-8 weeks after the initial session.

This second visit is crucial because some fading is expected. During this touch-up, adjustments can be made to the shape and colour saturation of your tattoo, and any areas that didn’t retain pigment well during healing can be corrected.

How much are touch-ups?

Touch-up pricing for Lip Blush treatments is based on the time elapsed since your last session:

Treatments within the last 12 months:
+ Lip Blush touch up $300

Treatments within the last 18 months:
+ Lip Blush touch up $325

Treatments within the last 24 months:
+ Lip Blush touch up $375

Please note, that any touch-ups required more than 24 months after your initial treatment will be priced as a new appointment.

Can I still get lip blush if I have a lip filler?

Absolutely, you can receive a lip blush treatment even if you have lip fillers.

However, it's important to space out your lip filler and lip tattoo appointments by at least 4 weeks. Ideally, you should get the lip filler first, followed by the lip tattoo procedure.

Am I a good candidate to have permanent Make-up?

To determine if you're a suitable candidate for permanent makeup, please note the following exclusions:

  • Individuals under the age of 18

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women

  • Anyone who has taken Accutane within the last year

  • Those with HIV, Hepatitis, or other infectious or viral diseases

  • Individuals currently undergoing chemotherapy

  • People on blood thinners, as these medications can impact skin's blood clotting and healing abilities

Additionally, if you've previously had eyebrow or lip work done by another artist, please send a photo of your brows or lips to customerpictures@keylaoliver.com for assessment.

Pre-Treatment Guidelines for Lip Tattooing

  1. Avoid Alcohol and Caffeine: Refrain from consuming alcohol or coffee on the day before your appointment. Both can impede the healing process and may increase sensitivity, swelling, and bleeding.

  2. Steer Clear of Certain Medications: Do not take Ibuprofen, Aspirin, Fish Oil, Vitamin E, or other blood thinners. If these medications are prescribed to you, please consult with your doctor beforehand.

  3. Allergy Check: If you have known sensitivities to dyes or cosmetics, request a patch test at least 24 hours before the procedure.

  4. For Herpes Simplex Virus Carriers: If you're prone to cold sores, lip tattooing might trigger an outbreak. It’s essential to take antiviral medication 3 days before and 5 days after the procedure, or as directed by your healthcare provider.

  5. No Recent Facial Treatments: Avoid chemical peels, laser skin resurfacing, or lip fillers at least 4 weeks prior to your appointment.

  6. Hydrate and Exfoliate Your Lips: Ensure your lips are well hydrated by drinking plenty of water and avoiding dehydration. Exfoliate gently using a lip scrub the day before your appointment and keep them moisturised with a rich lip balm.

  7. Meal Planning Post Procedure: Post treatment, avoid oily, spicy, acidic, or heavily seasoned foods.

  8. Familiarise Yourself with Aftercare: Review the aftercare instructions and adjust your schedule to accommodate the healing process.

What is the downtime for permanent make-up?

The downtime following permanent makeup is generally minimal to none. However, it's advisable not to schedule your appointment immediately before a vacation. After a lip or eyebrow procedure, it's best to avoid physical activities like sports, as well as sweating, saunas, and swimming pools for at least a week. While makeup can be applied around the treated areas, please avoid covering the lips or eyebrows directly.

Initially, the treated area will appear brighter than the final result, but this shouldn't hinder your daily activities. Post lip tattoo, some swelling is normal and typically subsides within a few hours, though it may last slightly longer for some individuals.

Can anyone have permanent make-up?

Permanent makeup isn't suitable for everyone. There are specific conditions, known as contraindications, that may prevent us from performing the treatment.

These include:

  • Being pregnant or breastfeeding.

  • The use of anticoagulants, including aspirin or similar medications.

  • Having an autoimmune disease (consultation with your doctor is necessary).

  • Hemophilia.

  • Psoriasis in the area to be treated.

  • Viral diseases such as jaundice, hepatitis, HIV, and AIDS.

  • Taking certain medications like steroids, cortisone, Accutane, and Retinol.

What to expect when I book an appointment?

When booking an appointment for Permanent Makeup, here's what to expect:

Firstly, please review the contraindications for above.

Permanent Makeup typically involves two sessions. The second session, a touch-up appointment, is complimentary and scheduled 6-8 weeks after the initial procedure. Comfort is a priority, so medical-grade numbing cream is applied both before and during the procedure to minimise any discomfort.

Before we begin the treatment, we'll have a detailed discussion about your expectations and the achievable results. It's crucial that you are completely satisfied with the planned shape and colour choice before the procedure commences.

Lip Tattoo After Care

For the first 2 - 4 days...

  • Lips will feel a bit sore and you can experience some swelling that might last for 1-2 days. Disposable cold packs may be applied as necessary to reduce any swelling.

  • The colour of the lips will look quite intense and the next day will darken as scabs will form as part of the healing process.

Lip care guidelines for the first 10 days...

  • Some dryness and/or itching is normal as skin is healing.

  • Apply a Healing Balm regularly using a cotton bud. Wash your hands before applying the product.

  • Wash your lips with a gentle face cleanser after meals and apply the given healing balm.

  • Avoid using harsh cleansers, creams, lipsticks, or any products on the treated area until all the flakes have naturally fallen off. These products can jeopardize the healing of the tattoo.

  • Avoid eating spicy and salty foods and drink through a straw for 3 days.

  • Do not share cups. No kissing, no smoking for 5 days, to prevent infection.

  • Sleep on a clean pillowcase to avoid infection.

  • Do not receive skincare beauty treatments for 5 days after the application.

Important notes to consider

  • Right after your treatment, expect the selected colour to appear more vivid and sharply defined.

  • The colour will darken on the following day.

  • Between days 3 to 5, the colour will start flaking off. It's crucial not to pick at these flakes to avoid losing colour prematurely; they should shed naturally.

  • Once the flaking subsides, your lips might seem to have little or no colour. However, over the next three weeks, the colour will gradually develop into a softer version of the initial hue.

  • The typical healing process lasts about 14 days, but this can vary depending on factors like immune system strength, stress levels, and diet.

  • Some unevenness in colour is common and expected, which is why the touch-up appointment is so important—it allows for any necessary adjustments.

  • If you're susceptible to cold sores, it's advised to get an antiviral prescription from your doctor before the procedure to prevent outbreaks.

  • If you're a blood donor, please notify the National Blood Service as you might be ineligible to donate blood for 4 months following the procedure.
